As part of Health Innovation East Midlands’ (HIEM’s) Innovation Insights webinar series, HIEM partnered with Nottingham and Nottinghamshire Refugee Forum to host a webinar to share top tips for engaging Refugees and Asylum Seekers communities.

Refugees and Asylum Seekers face disproportionate health inequalities and are amongst the most marginalised and underserved groups in our society, as evidenced in the Assessing new patients from overseas – Migrant health guide (Gov UK).

Previous adverse life experiences, lack of access to public funds, poverty and social exclusion all have a negative impact on health and wellbeing. This, together with communication issues and differing cultural expectations of what services are offered and how to access them, are just some of the barriers.

The well attended session provided insightful tips on how to best engage with communities, ideas, first hand experiences and provided knowledge on how to deliver more effective and inclusive research, services, and innovations.

As part of the session, a resourceful Q&A segment with the leads shared rich insights and experiences from others working or supporting the health and care system.

The session also launched a new top tips guide which is available for download
